Storytelling & Review (Final Task)

This final B1 unit reviews the key grammar and skills from the course: present perfect, past simple, and modals (advice + obligation). Students complete a mixed-skills final task: plan a story, tell it, listen to a partner’s story, and write a clear paragraph summary with feedback and revision.

SWBAT (Objectives)

  • Tell a short story using both past simple (finished events) and present perfect (experience/results).
  • Use time markers correctly (ever/never, already/yet, ago, last…).
  • Use modals to give advice and rules inside a story (should / ought to / had better / must / have to / can).
  • Listen to a partner’s story and ask follow-up questions.
  • Write a clear summary paragraph and improve it using feedback.

Quick Review (Before the Final Task)

Past simple

Finished time / specific time

Present perfect

No exact time / experience / result now
• I’ve never missed a flight before.
• I’ve already called customer service.

Modals in a story

• You should check the gate.
• You must show ID.
• You ’d better leave now!

Warm-up (3 minutes)

Choose the best tense/modals:
1) I (have lost / lost) my wallet last month.
2) Have you (ever been / ever went) to another country?
3) You (must / should) wear a helmet. It’s the law.

Final Task: “A Time Something Went Wrong”

Step 1: Choose a story (topic)
  • Travel problem (delay, lost item, wrong booking)
  • Work/school mistake (late, forgot, misunderstood)
  • Health/safety moment (lost keys, phone stolen)
  • Funny misunderstanding (language/culture)
Step 2: Planning (5 minutes)

Plan using the story map:
• Where/when? (past simple time)
• What happened? (sequence: first/then/finally)
• Result now? (present perfect)
• Advice/rules? (modals)

Step 3: Success rules
  • Use past simple at least 5 times
  • Use present perfect at least 3 times
  • Use 3 modals (advice/obligation/permission)
  • Use 4 linkers (first/then/however/so…)

  • Tell your story (2–3 minutes)
  • Use sequence linkers (first/next/then/finally)
  • Include advice/rules inside the story (modals)
Speaker B (listener)

Writing: Story Summary Paragraph

Task

Write one paragraph (110–150 words) summarizing your partner’s story. Include sequence linkers and at least one modal sentence (advice or rule).

Required elements
  • Topic sentence: what the story is about
  • 3–4 key events in order (first/then/finally)
  • One “result now” sentence (present perfect)
  • One advice/rule sentence (modal)
  • Concluding sentence
